Courses are made up of floating islands. Each time you play a random selection are chosen.

Randomized Course Layouts Every Time You Play

Golfing in Aether currently has 90 hand-crafted levels, each set on its own floating island. These individual levels are randomly combined into different course layouts, with the selection and order of holes changing from game to game. The game prioritizes levels you haven’t played recently, helping to keep the selection varied.

Each hand-crafted level can feature a variety of obstacles and interactive elements that affect the path of the ball and how you approach each of your shots. These include vertical and horizontal windmills, Movers that can travel up and down, side to side, or change the angle of a ramp, water wheels, and moving platforms. Different levels combine these elements in different ways, adding variety to the randomized courses.

The floating-island design of Golfing in Aether was partly inspired by accessibility feedback from players who found the densely packed layouts of traditional minigolf courses confusing. With 18 holes and their flags often positioned close together, it could be difficult to distinguish between holes and identify which one they were currently playing. By placing each hole on its own floating island, we give a clearer sense of separation and make the course easier to understand at a glance.

Players can also choose to hide other islands that are not currently relevant to their play. This reduces visual clutter and can make it easier to focus on the hole being played. As an additional benefit, disabling the rendering of other islands can improve performance for players using lower-end hardware.

You can also choose the theme of your course, with themes including Spring, Autumn, Winter and Dustbowl.

Multiple Ways to Play

Golfing in Aether offers several ways to play, including Casual, Competitive, and Race game mode presets.

  • Casual: The standard real-time experience, where all players play simultaneously. Levels have varying difficulty, providing a mix of easier and more challenging holes.
  • Competitive: A hotseat/turn-based mode where players take their shots one at a time, spectating the other players between turns. It uses the Hard difficulty setting, with more challenging levels, and gives players slightly less overall time to complete their shots.
  • Race: Uses Easy difficulty, and your stroke count doesn’t matter. Instead, race to the finish as fast as you can to win. Players earn 4 points for 1st place, 3 for 2nd, 2 for 3rd, and 1 point for every other finishing position.

In addition to these presets, Practice Mode lets you play individual levels, while Custom Game lets you create games with your own settings. You can tweak various game-mode rules, choose between 5, 9, or 18 holes (9 by default), and even choose exactly which individual levels you want to play.

Cross-Platform Multiplayer & Local Play

Golfing in Aether can be played solo or with other players, both online and locally. Online games support cross-play across all platforms and support up to 16 players. Local multiplayer supports up to 4 players with separate controllers, including split-screen and hotseat play, while Shared Input Mode allows up to 8 players to play in hotseat mode using a single controller. Local players can also join an online game. Solo players can play individual levels in Practice Mode or complete single-player sessions.

Golfing in Aether also features optional team play, including the option to place all players on the same team. This co-op mode lets everyone work towards a shared score rather than competing against one another.

Per Player Profiles & Customization

Golfing in Aether was designed around individual profiles for each local player. These profiles store each player’s personal settings, from cosmetic choices to controller remappings and accessibility options. Each local player can therefore use their own controller and accessibility settings independently while playing together.

One of the biggest benefits of this system is that once a player has created their profile, it is there waiting for them whenever they return to the game. Their personal settings, preferences, and accessibility options come with them, allowing them to pick up where they left off without having to configure everything again. This gives you more time to spend playing rather than navigating through settings menus.

You can customise your golf ball with different colours and patterns, as well as from a selection of hats and accessories such as glasses. Ball customisations are unlocked by earning XP and reaching higher XP levels.

Built for Accessibility

Accessibility was one of the driving reasons behind the creation of Golfing in Aether. We wanted to create a minigolf game that could be enjoyed by players with a wide range of accessibility needs, particularly when playing together in local multiplayer.

Accessibility settings are available from the first launch, with options designed to make the game easier to control, understand and play at your own pace. These include adjustable difficulty, full input remapping, and customizable colour and camera settings. Individual players can configure their own controls and accessibility options in local multiplayer and save them to their local profiles, so everyone can return to the game with their preferred settings already in place.

Who are we?

White Vetron text over a stylized letter V formed by white and pink horizontal lines.

Vetron started out as a UK based asset developer in 2013, forming on the back of several successful community mod projects.

During these early years we were able to gain the valuable skills and experience that enabled us to transition towards developing videogames.

Our first game, Capsa, was a collaboration with Canadian developer db.works, and launched in 2017. Capsa is an open-world exploration game with a strong social component. Due to the nature of the title, which was client/server based, it gave us considerable experience in working with multiplayer features and online service integration.

Continuing our focus on multiplayer titles, we developed and released our second game, Golfing in Aether, in 2022 as a one-person independent studio. Following its initial release, we continued to expand and improve the game through a series of free expansions and regular updates. In 2024, we brought the game to consoles and continued expanding its cross-platform multiplayer, with Mac support following later that year. Development has continued since then, with further multiplayer features, new content and quality-of-life improvements, including the free Anniversary expansion in 2026.

We ❤️ being creative and have a passion for developing games that can be played together with family and friends through rich multiplayer integration.
